Homeless Man Dies After Being Assaulted at Penang Food Court

Date:

An elderly homeless man died while undergoing treatment at Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ) after he was assaulted at a food court in Kampung Jawa on Saturday (Jan 24).

Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police chief ACP Anuar Abdul Rahman said police were notified by hospital staff that the unidentified man, believed to be in his 60s, passed away earlier today.

Preliminary investigations found that the victim had no identification documents and was homeless. He was taken to HSJ by ambulance at about 2.47am on Saturday and admitted for treatment before his death was confirmed.

A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was coronary heart disease. However, the victim was also found to have sustained fractures to the ribs on the left side of his body.

Police have detained a man believed to be involved in the incident. A urine test on the suspect returned positive for drugs. The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the senior investigating officer, ASP Hasryman Osman, at 04-576 2222 (ext: 2275) or the nearest police station.
