Starting tomorrow, egg prices in Malaysia will be floated, and to cushion the impact, industry players have agreed to introduce a special grade of eggs at a more affordable price.
According to the agriculture and food security ministry, these eggs will not be subsidised by the government, meaning their introduction comes at no cost to public funds. Foreigners will also be allowed to purchase them. However, the exact pricing has not yet been revealed.
The ministry noted that the government stands to save around RM100 million per month by ending egg subsidies — which previously cost RM2.5 billion between February 2022 and December 2024.
This restructuring is aimed at better managing government spending, allowing the savings to be redirected to welfare programs. The ministry expressed confidence that egg supply will remain sufficient and stable despite the end of subsidies.
Earlier, on May 1, Putrajaya removed price controls on chicken eggs and reduced subsidies from 10 sen to 5 sen per egg. It also stated that the average price of Grade B eggs in Malaysia remains lower than in many neighboring countries.
