UMNO Youth has voiced strong opposition to the proposed election for the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, following statements by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, yesterday.
UMNO Youth chief, Datuk Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh, said efforts to reject and thwart the plan for a Kuala Lumpur mayoral election must be pursued with the same determination as they did previously against the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) reforms and local government elections (PBT).
“First it was URA (PSB), then the PBT elections. Now it’s the Kuala Lumpur mayoral election. Just as we opposed and stopped the URA reforms and PBT elections before, we must also reject and defeat this plan,” he said in a Facebook statement today.
Yeoh had reportedly stated that a study is underway on implementing PBT elections in the capital, including the selection of a Kuala Lumpur mayor. The review has been ongoing since December, following a Private Member’s Bill submitted by a Federal Territory MP in November 2025 to amend the Federal Capital Act 1960 to allow governance reforms for Kuala Lumpur.
In 2023, the Federal Territory DAP had called on the government to reinstate mayoral elections at the Kuala Lumpur city level.
Dr. Muhamad Akmal, who is also the Merlimau state assemblyman, warned that UMNO must not be complacent in facing such initiatives. He urged members to strengthen their efforts and remain united despite internal conflicts over power struggles.
“They remain united because of power. We cannot be distracted by our own disputes. Wake up, my brothers,” he added.
