BMW Drunk Driver Kills Pedestrian, Leaves Two Kids in Car, Fined RM44,400

Date:

A 46-year-old Australian man and Singapore permanent resident was sentenced to 11 years in jail, fined S$12,000 (≈RM44,400), and banned from driving for 15 years after fatally hitting a pedestrian while driving under the influence with his two young children in the car.

The crash occurred on April 23, 2023, when the man, who had consumed alcohol and taken a drowsiness-inducing antihistamine, drove his BMW M3 Coupe at 111–122 km/h on a 70 km/h road. He struck a 64-year-old retiree, severing his body in the collision. His children, aged three and four, sustained minor injuries.

The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and repeat drink driving, with a third charge involving his children considered in sentencing. He had a prior conviction in 2015 for careless driving and drink driving.

Prosecutors argued for a longer sentence, highlighting the extreme risk he posed to both his children and the public, while defense lawyers cited fatigue, prior care for his newborn, and shock after the incident. The man remains on bail pending appeal.
