Human negligence continues to be the primary factor behind deadly road accidents in Malaysia, contributing to 80.6% of cases, according to the latest findings from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros).
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan told the Dewan Rakyat that driver behaviour remains a critical concern. “Human negligence includes speeding, inattention, and microsleep. Microsleep alone accounts for around 20% of accidents. Drivers feeling drowsy should stop immediately rather than continue driving,” he emphasised.
Road conditions were cited as a factor in 13.2% of fatal accidents, while poorly maintained vehicles contributed to 6.2%. Ahmad noted that the ministry is responsible for improving road infrastructure.
The minister was responding to Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak-PN), who highlighted safety concerns along Federal Route FT-109, citing over 51,000 complaints submitted via the MyJalan app. Ahmad said priority action would be taken once formal applications are processed through the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN).
Malaysia’s Works Ministry continues to maintain federal roads through routine and periodic programmes managed by the Public Works Department, supported by allocations of RM2.48 billion in 2024, RM2.96 billion in 2025, and RM2.42 billion in 2026.
In response to Manndzri Nasib (Tenggara-BN), Ahmad added that 15,160 out of 16,671 complaints under the ministry’s jurisdiction had been addressed. Nearly 70% of other reports (37,384) fell outside its responsibility but were forwarded to the relevant agencies under a “no wrong door” policy.
