UAE Hotel Rates Plummet By 75 Per Cent As Regional Tensions Impact Tourism Demand

Date:

The hospitality sector across the United Arab Emirates has experienced a significant contraction in room rates as ongoing geopolitical instability continues to affect the wider Middle East. Market data analysed by RIA Novosti indicates that accommodation costs at numerous four-star establishments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have dived by as much as 75 per cent this April. Budget-conscious travellers are now finding it possible to book stays for approximately AS$50 to AS$60 per night, representing a sharp fall from the premium pricing usually associated with the region’s peak travel season.

Top-tier five-star hotels have similarly felt the impact of this downward trend, with nightly rates dropping by more than 66 per cent to settle between AS$100 and AS$150. Specifically in Abu Dhabi, the Mercure hotel is currently listing double rooms at AS$54, which stands in stark contrast to the AS$200 to AS$250 price range observed during January and February. This pricing shift is further mirrored at properties such as TRYP by Wyndham, Ramada Downtown, and La Quinta by Wyndham, where rates have settled between AS$54 and AS$61.

In the capital, exclusive beachfront and luxury destinations have been forced to reduce their prices by half or more to sustain occupancy levels during the lull. Prestigious names like Rixos Marina and the Ritz-Carlton are offering entry-level rooms starting at AS$225 and AS$231 respectively, while the Shangri-La and Radisson have adjusted their tariffs to AS$201 and AS$125. These competitive rates are expected to persist throughout April, even as the local climate remains favourable with daytime temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Dubai’s hotel market is showing a parallel correction, with four-star venues such as Stella Di Mare, Time Oak, and Hyatt Place now averaging between AS$50 and AS$60 per night. The five-star category in the city is proving even more aggressive in its pricing strategies; for instance, stays at the Dusit Thani now start from AS$95 and Pullman Jumeirah from AS$90. Other major players, including Hilton Jumeirah, Radisson Blu, and Movenpick Jumeirah, have positioned their starting rates between AS$87 and AS$167 to lure visitors back during this period of uncertainty.

This abrupt downturn in the tourism economy is largely attributed to the recent surge in military activities across the West Asian landscape. Following the strikes initiated by the United States and Israel against targets in Iran on 28 February, which resulted in civilian casualties in Tehran, the regional security situation has remained fluid. Iran’s subsequent retaliatory strikes against Israeli territory and American military bases have created a cautious atmosphere, significantly cooling international interest in travel to the UAE for the time being.
