Elderly Man Dies After Being Hit By Car In Bayan Lepas

An elderly man has died after battling for his life for nearly nine hours following a road accident in Bayan Lepas on Wednesday.

The incident, which occurred at about 2.55pm along Jalan Tun Dr Awang, involved a 71-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a car driven by a 19-year-old local man.

Northeast district deputy police chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake said initial investigations found the vehicle was travelling from Bayan Lepas towards the city centre when the collision occurred near the Bayan Lepas roundabout.

The victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Penang Hospital for further treatment.

However, he was pronounced dead at around 12.05am on Thursday while receiving medical care.

The driver of the car was not injured in the incident.

Police are continuing investigations into the case, which is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

Earlier, a video clip of the incident went viral on social media, showing the elderly man being hit while crossing the road at a zebra crossing believed to be in the Bayan Lepas area.
