US President Donald Trump has dismissed Attorney General Pam Bondi in the latest shake-up within his administration, according to reports.
In an announcement, Trump said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will step in as acting attorney general while a permanent replacement is being considered.
Despite the decision, Trump publicly praised Bondi, describing her as a “great American patriot” who had performed strongly in tackling crime during her tenure. He added that she would transition into the private sector following her departure.
However, sources indicated that Trump had grown dissatisfied with aspects of Bondi’s performance, including her handling of cases linked to Jeffrey Epstein, as well as concerns over actions involving political opponents.
Bondi’s removal marks the second Cabinet-level departure in recent weeks, following the earlier dismissal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, signalling ongoing restructuring within the administration.
Reports also suggested that Trump had previously discussed the possibility of removing Bondi with close allies, and later informed her directly in what was described as a tense exchange.
In a statement on X, Bondi said she would assist in ensuring a smooth transition before leaving public service, calling her role in strengthening national safety “one of the greatest honours” of her career.
There had been earlier speculation that she might be reassigned to another government role, including a judicial position, but current developments indicate she will exit public service entirely.
Meanwhile, Trump is said to be weighing several candidates for the permanent post, including Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lee Zeldin. Any nomination is expected to face a challenging confirmation process in the US Senate amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Justice Department.
The development comes as Bondi had also been under increasing pressure over her handling of high-profile investigations, particularly those linked to Epstein, which have drawn significant scrutiny in recent months.
