A 57-year-old religious teacher is expected to face legal action after a fatal incident in which a student was killed when an SUV she was driving crashed in front of a school surau in Tanjong Mas, Kelantan.
Kelantan police chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the woman, described as a religious teacher, is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. The offence carries a penalty of a fine between RM20,000 and RM50,000 and imprisonment of five to 10 years upon conviction.
He said the suspect had been remanded for two days before being released on police bail, and she is expected to be charged in court soon.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 1.50pm at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tanjong Mas, where a 13-year-old student, identified as Nur Fatimatul Hawa Mohd Azaudin, was killed after being struck by a Honda HR-V near the school surau.
Authorities said initial investigations suggest the driver may have accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal, causing the vehicle to lurch forward and hit two female students.
The case has been described as a tragic accident that unfolded within the school compound, leaving the victim’s family devastated after the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.
Police said further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash, including whether mechanical or human error contributed to the incident.
The case continues to draw public attention as authorities prepare for prosecution proceedings in the near future.
