MCMC Probes Viral Fake Claim That Malaysia Supplied Diesel To Philippines

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual suspected of spreading false information claiming that Malaysia supplied 329,000 barrels of diesel to the Philippines, when the shipment actually belongs to a private trading company.

In a statement on Wednesday, the commission confirmed that it has recorded the suspect’s statement and seized a communication device believed to have been used to upload the misleading content online.

Authorities clarified that the diesel shipment in question is owned by trading firm Vitol, and not by Petronas or the Malaysian government, as alleged in the viral claim.

The case forms part of a wider enforcement effort against misinformation linked to the global energy crisis, particularly following heightened online speculation stemming from geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

As of April 14, the MCMC said a total of 47 investigation papers have been opened involving the spread of false news across social media and digital platforms related to energy and fuel issues.

The commission also highlighted several other circulating false claims, including exaggerated fuel price increases, fake electricity tariff hikes, allegations that Malaysian vessels were charged tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, and misinformation regarding BUDI95 subsidy eligibility for Singaporeans.

Investigations are being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction.

MCMC reiterated that it treats the spread of misinformation seriously and will continue to take firm action against individuals or parties found to be misusing digital platforms to mislead the public.
