Johor Speaker’s Statement Under Investigation After Multiple Police Reports

Date:

Police have opened investigation papers into a statement issued by Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi on social media after receiving 153 police reports nationwide as of 3pm on Thursday.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said two additional police reports were also lodged by a former Johor state executive councillor and the political secretary to the Johor Menteri Besar earlier the same day.

He said the number of reports received across the country stood at 153 as of 3pm, adding that the figure is expected to increase as more reports continue to be lodged.

Police are investigating the case under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for acts having seditious tendencies, as well as Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements that may cause public mischief.

Authorities have urged the public to respect the ongoing investigation process and refrain from making comments or speculation that could cause public anxiety or unrest.

Police also warned that firm action will be taken against any individual found misusing online platforms or digital communication services for unlawful purposes.

They further emphasised the importance of maintaining responsible communication in the digital space to ensure social harmony, stability, and respectful public discourse.
