Kelantan Urges Sukma 2026 To Proceed Even If Scale Is Reduced

Date:

The Kelantan state government has expressed hope that the 22nd edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma), scheduled to be held in Selangor, can still go ahead even if it is scaled down, echoing similar suggestions made by Terengganu.

State Youth, Sports, NGOs and Community Unity Committee chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad said Kelantan respects the royal decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who had previously recommended postponing the biennial sporting event. However, he urged the Selangor government to reconsider the matter.

He said Kelantan’s athletes have already been preparing for nearly two years, starting after the conclusion of Sukma Sarawak in 2024, with significant time, effort and financial resources invested in their preparations.

Zamakhshari warned that postponing the games could negatively impact athletes’ morale and performance, especially after long-term training commitments.

He added that if necessary, the scale of the competition could be reduced, as long as the games are still held to allow athletes to compete and showcase their abilities.

His comments were made after attending the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session at the Kota Darulnaim Complex today.
