The Penang state government has decided not to implement a Work From Home (WFH) policy for the time being, following a review of current administrative needs and operational conditions.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the decision was made during today’s State Executive Council meeting after a comprehensive assessment of government department operations, service delivery efficiency, and the overall situation, which he described as still under control.
He added that although WFH will not be adopted at this stage, the state government will continue to monitor developments and reassess the need for such a policy should circumstances change in the future.
“If there are any changes that require a more flexible approach, including the reintroduction of work-from-home arrangements, appropriate steps will be considered,” he said.
The announcement comes as around 200,000 federal civil servants in the Klang Valley reportedly began working from home since April 15 due to a global energy crisis, with similar arrangements extended to other major cities and state capitals, particularly for staff living more than 8 kilometres from their workplaces. Essential services such as healthcare and security remain exempt.
Chow stressed that the Penang government remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted public service delivery while safeguarding the welfare of civil servants, with a continued focus on balancing efficiency and employee well-being.
