Anwar Welcomes Incoming MACC Chief, Hopes to Advance Anti-Corruption and Enforcement Reforms

Date:

(Bukit Mertajam, 25th) — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will soon welcome a new Chief Commissioner. With the appointee’s strong judicial experience and professional background, he is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the agency, further strengthen anti-corruption efforts, reinforce the integrity system, and enhance the overall performance of enforcement teams across states.

Speaking to reporters after attending the opening of the NADI (National Information Dissemination Centre) in Kubang Semang this afternoon, Anwar made the remarks when asked about the leadership transition within the MACC.

He noted that the incoming Chief Commissioner, Abdul Halim, comes from within the system, and that the government made the appointment after thorough discussions and careful evaluation with relevant parties.

“Although he may not be particularly prominent and does not have a notable commercial background or other controversies, his professional capability and experience are sufficient for the role,” he said.

From a policy perspective, Anwar believes the appointment will add positive value to the MACC and continue improving the performance of enforcement personnel nationwide.

He also expressed appreciation to the outgoing MACC Chief Commissioner, Azam Baki, acknowledging his contributions to the country’s anti-corruption efforts during his tenure.

Since assuming office in March 2020, Azam Baki’s contract as MACC Chief Commissioner has been extended three times — in 2023, 2024, and 2025 — each for one year, with his current term set to expire on May 12 this year.
