A 61-year-old man in Shenzhen has undergone a high-level urological procedure after suffering from severe erectile dysfunction for over a decade, following unsuccessful drug treatments.
According to reports from Shenzhen media outlets, the patient, surnamed Liu (pseudonym), began experiencing erectile dysfunction in his fifties. His condition progressively worsened over the years and eventually became classified as severe and treatment-resistant, with doctors noting irreversible physiological changes.
After comprehensive evaluation at Shenzhen University General Hospital, medical specialists concluded that conventional medication was no longer effective. The team then recommended penile prosthesis implantation surgery, regarded in the medical field as a last-resort treatment option for advanced cases.
During the operation, doctors implanted a “three-piece” inflatable prosthetic system, consisting of paired 18-centimetre cylinders, a fluid reservoir, and a control pump. The device was carefully positioned through a small incision in the scrotal area to minimise visible scarring and tissue damage.
The reservoir was placed behind the pubic bone, while the pump was embedded under the skin of the scrotum, allowing the patient to control the device manually after recovery. The surgery was completed successfully, and post-operative checks confirmed the implant was functioning normally.
Liu was discharged after several days of observation and later returned for follow-up care, where doctors also provided guidance on proper usage and maintenance. Medical staff said that with correct care, the device could function for more than 10 years, offering renewed quality of life for patients with similar conditions.
