PM Anwar To Raise Malaysia’s Energy Security With Putin During Russia Visit

Date:

Ensuring a stable and uninterrupted energy supply for Malaysia will be one of the key priorities during Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s working visit to Russia, where he is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Anwar said the visit, which will also involve engagements between ASEAN leaders and the Russian leadership, presents an important opportunity to strengthen cooperation and secure long-term oil and diesel supplies for Malaysia.

Speaking during a gathering with fishermen, farmers and local residents at Pantai Leka Food Court, the Prime Minister stressed that energy security remains a critical national concern amid growing global uncertainties.

“One of the key issues I will raise with President Putin is ensuring that oil supplies continue to be channelled to Malaysia. This is one of the advantages of maintaining good relations with other countries,” he said.

According to Anwar, proactive diplomatic engagement is necessary to safeguard Malaysia’s long-term energy needs and prevent potential supply disruptions that have already begun affecting several countries in the ASEAN region.

He added that prudent economic management and strong international partnerships have helped Malaysia maintain among the lowest domestic fuel prices in the world, with RON95 petrol continuing to be sold at RM1.99 per litre.

The Prime Minister also expressed concern over escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia following attacks involving Israel, the United States and Iran, which led to the temporary closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Anwar warned that any prolonged disruption along the vital shipping corridor could significantly impact global oil markets and eventually affect Malaysia through higher fuel and energy costs.

However, he revealed that recent discussions with Shehbaz Sharif had provided some optimism regarding the situation.

According to Anwar, the Pakistani Prime Minister indicated that a peace agreement could potentially be reached soon, with hopes that the conflict may be resolved by the end of the week.

“He informed me that an agreement could be signed and the war may be resolved by Friday. We certainly hope for that because if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, the effects will eventually be felt in Malaysia and oil prices will increase,” he said.

Anwar noted that global oil prices had already begun to ease slightly, but cautioned that continued instability in the region could quickly reverse that trend.

As global energy markets remain sensitive to geopolitical developments, Malaysia is seeking to strengthen international partnerships to ensure the country remains protected against future supply shocks and price volatility.
