Many people have recently been influenced by social media trends suggesting that storing perfume in the refrigerator can help the fragrance last longer and stay fresh.
However, experts caution that this practice may actually do more harm than good, as improper storage conditions can affect the quality and longevity of the scent.
One key concern is temperature instability. Every time the refrigerator door is opened, fluctuations in temperature can occur, potentially disrupting the chemical structure of the perfume and altering its original fragrance.
Another issue is humidity. The moist environment inside a fridge can lead to condensation forming inside the bottle if it is not tightly sealed, which may dilute or change the scent composition.
There is also the risk of fragrance contamination. If the bottle is not fully airtight, surrounding food odours may seep in and affect the perfume’s original aroma.
In addition, repeated removal from cold storage can cause “temperature shock,” which may speed up the degradation process of the fragrance over time.
Instead, experts recommend storing perfume in a cool, dark and stable environment such as a drawer or cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Keeping perfumes in their original boxes can also provide extra protection, while bathrooms are discouraged due to high humidity levels.
Perfumes typically last between three to five years depending on their ingredients, and they tend to perform better on well-moisturised skin for longer-lasting scent retention.
