PN To Name New Opposition Leader Before June Parliament Sitting

Date:

Perikatan Nasional is expected to announce its new Opposition Leader before the next Dewan Rakyat sitting begins in June, following the vacancy left by former Hamzah Zainudin.

PN deputy chairman Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the coalition had already submitted an official letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul informing him of the vacant position.

However, he said PN has yet to decide on the individual who will take over the role.

“God willing, before the parliamentary sitting begins, we will name a new Opposition Leader because there is currently no urgency to announce a replacement since the Dewan Rakyat session has not started yet,” he told reporters at Wisma Sri Pahang on Thursday.

Tuan Ibrahim added that PN would also be holding its Supreme Council meeting this Saturday, during which several important matters are expected to be decided.

When asked about the possibility of seat rearrangements in the Dewan Rakyat, he did not dismiss the likelihood of such changes taking place in the future.

Meanwhile, commenting on the apology issued by Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh over controversial remarks made during a political ceramah in Kuala Terengganu on Sunday, Tuan Ibrahim said the matter had been addressed internally.

The Pasir Puteh MP had drawn criticism after allegedly linking companions of Prophet Muhammad SAW to offensive terms during his speech.

“Teguran has already been made, he accepted it, admitted his mistake, apologised and retracted the statement. I think that action is sufficient,” said Tuan Ibrahim, who is also PAS deputy president.

“At this point, that is the best approach. If we make mistakes, we admit them and withdraw the statement,” he added.

The issue had sparked public debate online, with various parties calling for greater sensitivity when discussing religious figures during political events.
