Police Hunt Group After Viral Flare Incident In Bukit Bintang

Date:

Police are tracking down a group of men who were seen lighting flares on top of a four-wheel-drive vehicle along Jalan Sultan Ismail near a fast food restaurant in Bukit Bintang early Monday morning.

Dang Wangi police chief Sazalee Adam said authorities detected a viral video uploaded on the Threads application showing about eight individuals travelling in a Toyota Hilux and two electric scrambler motorcycles.

Initial investigations found that the incident occurred at around 2am when several individuals were seen igniting flares in the busy tourist hotspot.

According to Sazalee, the act could threaten public safety and disturb residents as well as business operators in the Bukit Bintang area.

Police believe the group had been moving around the Bukit Bintang vicinity before the footage was later shared on social media.

Investigators also detected a banner displaying the number “6.6” in the video, although the actual meaning behind the message remains under investigation.

“We are still investigating the purpose and significance of the wording displayed,” he said during a press conference on Monday.

Police have since opened an investigation under Section 290 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The case is also being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Authorities are urging members of the public who may have information regarding the incident to come forward to assist investigations.

Those with information can contact the Dang Wangi district police headquarters operations room at 03-2600 2222 or report to the nearest police station.
