PM Anwar Assures No Cuts To Sports And Athlete Welfare Funding

Date:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has assured that funding for sports development and athlete welfare will continue to be protected despite the country facing financial constraints.

Speaking at the National Sports Awards 2025 ceremony on Tuesday, Anwar stressed that the welfare of athletes, including training programmes and sports facilities, must remain a priority.

He said the government remains committed to ensuring the continued growth and success of Malaysian sports following the encouraging achievements shown by national athletes.

“Although we say there are financial constraints, I have given my assurance and informed Taufiq during the Cabinet meeting that sports activities and athlete welfare will continue to be fully protected. There will be no cuts,” he said.

The prime minister was referring to Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari.

Anwar acknowledged that some athletes may be worried about the possibility of budget reductions affecting their preparations and welfare.

“I think the athletes are slightly worried and anxious. Don’t worry. That is not your problem, that is the minister’s problem,” he joked during his speech.

He added that Malaysia has already achieved commendable standards in sports, with several athletes surpassing expectations and projected performances.

Anwar expressed hope that the country would continue producing sporting success stories and maintain momentum in strengthening Malaysia’s sporting excellence on the international stage.
