The government is taking steps to ensure Malaysia’s energy supply security can be sustained until December, despite a global supply crisis that has disrupted economic chains and driven up energy costs, says Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said current domestic energy reserves are projected to last until July. He added that efforts are being intensified to extend supply stability, including securing additional imports from overseas.
“At present, God willing, our energy supply security will last until July. Petronas is working hard to secure available supplies, even sourcing from Africa,” he said.
“If all supplies can be secured, God willing, we can extend energy security until December,” he said at his ministry’s monthly assembly.
He noted that the global energy crisis is affecting the entire economic chain, particularly the logistics sector, which is facing rising costs that eventually impact goods prices and overall energy stability.
Fadillah said the effects are also being felt in other sectors, including healthcare and manufacturing, due to shortages of raw materials such as plastics used in packaging and industrial production.
“We are still taking things lightly in Malaysia,” he said.
“Many still feel that the country is not facing a crisis, but in reality, many parties are working hard to maintain this level of stability.”
He urged all stakeholders to play their part by conserving electricity and water to help reduce energy consumption.
According to him, this would help extend the country’s energy supply period and minimise the impact of the ongoing global crisis.
Fadillah added that the government, through weekly National Economic Action Council meetings, is engaging various sectors to assess the impact of the crisis and explore intervention measures.
He said these efforts include supporting small and medium enterprises, preventing job losses, and reducing the wider economic impact.
The government will continue to prioritise three key areas in the energy sector — supply security, affordability for the people, and environmental sustainability.
