The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) has enhanced its operational preparedness in anticipation of potential forest and peatland fires following expectations of drier weather conditions linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
Director-General Datuk Seri Ts. Nor Hisham Mohammad said all state fire directors have been instructed to strengthen readiness to ensure teams are fully prepared in the event of an increase in fire incidents.
He said a special meeting with state fire directors was held about two weeks ago to coordinate preparations ahead of the expected dry season this year.
Nor Hisham said preparations this year have been carried out more thoroughly compared with previous years due to forecasts of slightly drier weather conditions.
He added that JBPM is also strengthening its operational capabilities through the acquisition of 70 compact vehicles designed for use in forest and bushfire operations, as well as an additional 80 portable pumps.
However, he noted that current monitoring and readings on the El Niño situation in the Pacific region indicate that conditions are not expected to reach a critical level.
He said while there may still be several hot days, intermittent rainfall is expected to help keep conditions under control for now.
