Two mild earthquakes measuring magnitude 2.9 were recorded in Sabah and Sarawak within a span of less than 12 hours on Tuesday, with tremors felt across several towns in both states.
The first quake struck Ranau, Sabah, at 10.36am at a depth of 10km, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). Residents in Kundasang, Ranau town and Kota Belud reported experiencing mild tremors.
Later that night at 10.33pm, another earthquake of similar magnitude occurred in Mambong, Sarawak, also at a depth of 10km. Tremors from the second quake were felt in the Samarahan and Serian areas.
In a broader context, Malaysia occasionally experiences low-magnitude seismic activity, particularly in eastern regions, although such events are typically minor and cause little to no damage.
MetMalaysia said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates from time to time, while assuring the public that there was no cause for concern as both quakes were classified as weak.
No injuries or property damage were reported in either incident.
Ranau is known as one of the country’s most seismically active areas, with the most significant event recorded in June 2015 when a magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck the district, claiming 18 lives, including students and teachers during a Mount Kinabalu expedition.
