Former Telecom Employee Arrested Over RM83,000 Theft Of Devices And Cash

Date:

A former employee of a telecommunications company in Taman Tun Dr Ismail has been arrested after allegedly stealing various electronic devices and cash belonging to his former employer, with losses estimated at RM83,000.

Brickfields district police chief Asst Comm Hoo Chang Hook said the 22-year-old suspect was detained following a police report lodged by a company representative yesterday.

In a broader context, cases involving insider theft often occur when former employees retain knowledge of internal stock systems and security weaknesses after leaving an organisation.

He said the case came to light after the company conducted a review of its closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and discovered missing stock, including mobile phones and Apple Watch devices.

The management was also alerted by staff who noticed a significant shortage of smartphones and smartwatches, raising suspicions against the former employee.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had resigned from the company on May 29, shortly before the theft was discovered.

Among the missing items were 12 mobile phones of various brands, three Apple Watches and about RM550 in cash.

Police also seized several mobile phones, Apple Watches and a bag believed to be linked to the case.

Initial questioning found that the suspect admitted involvement and confirmed that the seized items belonged to the company. He also revealed that one of the phones had been sent to a shop in Sungai Buloh for repair.

The case is being investigated under Section 381 of the Penal Code, and further investigations are ongoing.
