The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will take action against any complaints involving online gambling-related content, especially ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicking off this Thursday.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the public is encouraged to lodge reports with MCMC if they come across any links or materials linked to online betting activities.
He stressed that online gambling is strictly prohibited in Malaysia, and appropriate enforcement action will be taken once complaints are received.
“If the MCMC receives reports, action can be taken. So if the public sees any gambling-related links or content online, they should forward the complaint to MCMC for action,” he said at a press conference in conjunction with the Safe Media Reporting Workshop and Interactive Training Session held yesterday.
Fahmi also noted that similar action can be taken against online gambling portals operating illegally.
Previously, reports highlighted that international betting syndicates and local bookies are expected to ramp up operations during the World Cup, using online platforms and foreign-based websites to collect wagers.
The report also revealed that betting activities have shifted from traditional methods to digital channels, with agents actively gathering funds from punters ahead of major football matches.
