The High Court has ordered Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor to pay RM67.5 million in damages to a Lebanese jewellery company after she was found liable over the disappearance of 43 pieces of jewellery valued at US$14.57 million.
High Court Judge Datuk Quay Chew Soon ruled that Rosmah must settle the sum within one month from today’s judgment in favour of Global Royalty Trading SAL.
In delivering the decision, the court found that there was prima facie evidence showing that Rosmah had failed to return the jewellery items to the company.
The court also ordered Rosmah to pay RM150,000 in costs, split equally between the plaintiff and a third party involved in the case.
The lawsuit was filed on March 29, 2023, when Global Royalty Trading alleged that Rosmah had misrepresented the status of 44 jewellery items, including diamond necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and a tiara, which were allegedly handed over to her through the company’s agent.
The Beirut-based company claimed that only one of the 44 items was in police custody, while the remaining 43 pieces were unaccounted for.
It further alleged that Rosmah had shifted responsibility to the Malaysian government, despite claims that the jewellery was not in official custody.
The High Court decision brings closure to a long-running legal dispute involving the high-value jewellery consignment.
