A Malaysian tour group travelling in Xi’an, China, has gone viral after reportedly ordering around 1,200 parcels through Taobao and having them delivered directly to their hotel, resulting in packages piling up throughout the hotel lobby.
The incident was highlighted in a video shared on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu by a travel company believed to have organised the group’s tour.
Footage showed hotel staff sorting and distributing the large volume of parcels after they arrived at the property.
To help identify the deliveries, one woman believed to be leading the group reportedly printed out tracking numbers, allowing hotel employees to match the packages with their respective owners more efficiently.
The sheer number of deliveries quickly overwhelmed parts of the hotel, with stacks of parcels reportedly occupying sections of the lobby and common areas.
One tour member was said to have purchased around 50 items and was seen transporting the goods back to her hotel room using a large plastic bag.
The video soon attracted widespread attention from Chinese netizens, many of whom expressed surprise at the scale of the online shopping spree.
Some social media users criticised the group’s actions, arguing that the large number of deliveries had created unnecessary work for hotel employees.
Several commenters noted that hotel staff had to spend additional time receiving, sorting and handling the parcels, with some claiming the situation disrupted normal hotel operations.
Others remarked that while guests are free to shop online during their travels, consideration should be given to the workload placed on hospitality workers.
The incident has since sparked discussions online about travel etiquette and the responsibilities of tourists when using hotel facilities for large-scale parcel deliveries.
Despite the criticism, the unusual shopping haul has continued to attract attention across social media, with many users fascinated by the scale of purchases made during the group’s trip to China.
