A police pursuit through Seremban ended with the arrest of two suspected cable thieves after the car they were travelling in refused to stop for inspection and attempted to flee authorities on Monday morning.
Seremban District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Yatim Osman said police received a report regarding the incident at approximately 10.45am. A police MPV subsequently gave chase to a Proton Waja after its occupants allegedly ignored instructions to pull over for checks.
The pursuit came to an end when officers successfully intercepted the vehicle along Jalan Tun Dr Ismail. Two men were arrested at the scene, while a third suspect managed to escape and remains at large.
A thorough search of the Proton Waja uncovered 14 items believed to have been used in cable theft activities. Police also seized a scheduled weapon believed to be linked to criminal activities.
In a further twist, officers discovered two transparent plastic packets suspected to contain illegal drugs inside the vehicle. The findings have widened the scope of the investigation beyond cable theft.
According to Mohd Yatim, both arrested suspects admitted during questioning that they had carried out cable theft operations around the Seremban area together with their accomplice who is still on the run. Cable theft has become an ongoing concern due to the damage and disruption it causes to public infrastructure and services.
Background checks revealed that the two suspects were no strangers to law enforcement. One suspect has seven previous criminal records, while the other has 10 records involving various criminal and drug-related offences.
Investigations also found that the Proton Waja used in the incident was registered under the name of a woman. Police are currently looking into the ownership of the vehicle and its connection to the suspects.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 and Section 279 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act.
The suspects are expected to be brought before the Seremban Court for a remand application as police continue their investigations. Authorities have also urged members of the public with information to come forward and assist in locating the remaining suspect.
