‘Mental Torture!’ Man Reported To Police Over Painfully Off-Key Livestream Singing

Date:

A livestream singer in southern China has gone viral after residents reportedly called the police, claiming his off-key singing was causing them “mental torture”.

The man, known online as “Cai Ge”, regularly performs livestream singing sessions along the banks of the Yongjiang River in Nanning, Guangxi.

According to his social media profile, he describes himself as a music producer, songwriter and composer. He frequently shares his original music and often performs live in public spaces.

Despite his confidence and passion for music, many viewers have criticised his singing ability, with some claiming he consistently sings out of tune throughout entire performances.

Online reports said the situation reached a breaking point on June 12 when a member of the public allegedly contacted the police after becoming fed up with the performance.

The complainant reportedly claimed the singing was so unpleasant that it amounted to “mental torture” for those within earshot.

Videos circulating online showed the singer performing enthusiastically and expressing strong confidence in his musical talent. Some netizens joked that he appeared convinced he could “save the music industry” with his songs.

Local police later confirmed receiving complaints related to the incident.

A staff member from the Huaqiang Police Station under the Nanning Xixiangtang Public Security Bureau said outdoor livestreaming and singing activities are generally allowed at the public square before 10pm.

However, officers may intervene if complaints are received and will typically advise performers to lower the volume.

Following the incident, Cai Ge issued a public apology on June 15, acknowledging that police officers had approached him regarding the complaints.

He also promised to sing more quietly during future livestream sessions.

The unusual case has since attracted widespread attention online, with many social media users divided between defending the man’s right to perform and sympathising with residents who said they were forced to listen to his off-key singing.
