A moderate earthquake measuring magnitude 5.3 struck Mindanao, Philippines at 2.57pm today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
In a statement, MetMalaysia said the quake occurred at a depth of 24 kilometres, with its epicentre located about 98 kilometres southeast of Koronadal City.
Authorities confirmed that initial assessments found no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the seismic event.
The department also noted that a stronger earthquake measuring magnitude 7.8 hit Mindanao on June 8, which caused significant destruction and loss of life.
That earlier disaster reportedly claimed at least 61 lives and affected more than 346,000 residents, with aftershocks continuing to be recorded in the affected region.
MetMalaysia said it continues to monitor seismic activity in the region to ensure public safety and provide timely updates if there are any changes in risk levels.
