Pregnant Woman, Babies Among 23 Trapped In Ulu Geruntum Flash Flood

Date:

A pregnant woman and two babies are among 23 individuals reported to be trapped following a flash flood and multiple bridge collapses in the Sungai Ulu Geruntum area, Kampar, on Friday evening.

The incident, which occurred at about 6.30pm, was triggered by continuous heavy rain that led to strong currents and a sudden surge of water from Sungai Ulu Kampar to Sungai Ulu Kepayang, according to Kampar district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Nazri Daud.

He said the situation caused the collapse of three bridges — one in Ulu Kepayang and two in Kampung Ulu Geruntum — cutting off access to several Orang Asli settlements in the area.

Based on preliminary information, 23 victims comprising 14 adults, four children, two elderly individuals, a pregnant woman and two babies were reported stranded after the bridge at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Geruntum gave way.

Authorities confirmed that several residents in the affected villages remain unable to leave the area, although the exact number of those still trapped has yet to be determined.

Mohamad Nazri said around 30 villagers affected by the disaster have been relocated to safer locations, including Kampung Ulu Geruntum Chalet and Gopeng Highland Resort.

He added that welfare assistance, including food and basic necessities, has been provided by resort management to those evacuated.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported so far, although river currents remain strong despite a slight drop in water levels.

Police, Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel continue to monitor the situation closely as coordination efforts with relevant agencies are ongoing to ensure the safety of affected residents.
