A senior citizen sustained serious injuries after allegedly being assaulted with a hammer by a family member in Kampung Kuala Abang, Dungun, yesterday afternoon.
Dungun district police chief Superintendent Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said the incident occurred at about 6.55pm, leaving the 79-year-old victim requiring urgent hospital treatment.
He said initial investigations revealed that the victim was living with the 25-year-old suspect at the time of the incident.
According to police, tensions escalated when the victim allegedly tried to stop the suspect from leaving the house, which then led to an argument between both parties.
“The situation turned violent when the victim was pushed and subsequently struck with a hammer,” he said.
The victim, who suffered injuries to the head, was rushed to Dungun Hospital for further treatment and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Police later arrested the suspect, who is believed to be suffering from a mental health condition and was found in possession of a hammer believed to have been used in the attack.
Investigators confirmed that the suspect will be brought to court for a remand application as the case is being probed under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.
Authorities added that anyone with further information regarding the incident is urged to assist police investigations.
