PN Submits Formal Notification To Reinstate Hamzah As Opposition Chief

Date:

Perikatan Nasional (PN) has officially moved to reinstate Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin as Opposition Leader following the submission of a formal notification to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s Office by PN chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah confirmed that the notification was submitted on June 18 after a meeting involving 62 MPs held a day earlier, where the decision was finalised.

He said the consensus was reached during the June 17 gathering of MPs, which reflected strong backing for Hamzah’s return to the post ahead of the upcoming parliamentary sitting.

According to Saifuddin, Hamzah’s reappointment has the support of all 43 PAS MPs as well as 19 MPs aligned with Hamzah’s so-called “Reset” movement, which has been gaining traction within the opposition bloc.

The Dewan Rakyat’s second meeting of the fifth parliamentary session is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 22, and will run for 16 days until July 16, setting the stage for key political developments in the opposition front.

Hamzah’s return follows a period of political reshuffling after Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar was briefly appointed Opposition Leader on May 16, filling the vacancy left after Hamzah resigned on April 12 following internal party developments.

The situation also comes in the wake of a wider realignment involving 18 Bersatu MPs who previously expressed solidarity with Hamzah at the Reset Convention in Tanah Merah, where PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang reportedly announced Hamzah’s reinstatement.

Among the 19 MPs aligned with the Reset movement are several prominent figures including Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee, Datuk Khlir Mohd Nor, Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Datuk Rosol Wahid and Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, alongside others from various constituencies across the country.

The developments signal continued repositioning within the opposition bloc as Parliament prepares to reconvene, with leadership dynamics expected to be closely watched in the coming weeks.
