Malaysia is set to strengthen its bilateral relationship with Bangladesh as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrives in the country on Monday for an official visit aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple key sectors.
The visit, made at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, marks Rahman’s first official overseas trip since assuming office in February 2026, underscoring the significance of the engagement between both nations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rahman will be accorded an official welcome ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya before holding formal bilateral talks with Anwar at Kompleks Perdana Putra.
Both leaders are expected to review the current state of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations while exploring broader collaboration in areas such as trade and investment, human resource management, semiconductors, energy, agriculture and education. Discussions will also touch on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
In a move highlighting deeper cooperation, the two countries are also set to witness the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation, alongside two Exchange of Notes (EoN) covering counter-terrorism research and investment promotion and facilitation.
Beyond official talks, Anwar is also scheduled to host Rahman at a formal luncheon, reflecting the continued diplomatic goodwill between both governments.
Rahman will be accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, and several senior government officials throughout the visit.
Trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh continues to grow steadily, reaching RM12.18 billion in 2025, with Malaysian exports valued at RM10.08 billion, led primarily by petroleum products.
Bangladesh currently ranks as Malaysia’s 28th largest trading partner, while also being one of the key export and import partners in South Asia after India, reflecting its rising importance in Malaysia’s international trade network.
