A local man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during an Op Mabuk operation conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Penampang District Police Headquarters (IPD) at Jalan Pintas Penampang in the early hours of Sunday.
The arrest was made after police detected the suspect committing an offence under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, according to Penampang district police chief Superintendent Sammy Newton.
He said individuals convicted under the provision face a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine ranging from RM10,000 to RM30,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for two years.
The operation, led by BSPT chief Inspector Rozami Hj Ahmad and assisted by seven police personnel, was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to curb drink-driving offences and improve road safety.
During the enforcement exercise, officers inspected a total of 63 individuals and 53 vehicles at the location.
Police also issued 24 traffic summonses for various offences, with the highest number involving motorists found driving without a valid licence. A total of 16 summonses were issued for that offence alone.
Authorities noted that regular operations such as Op Mabuk are essential in ensuring motorists comply with traffic regulations while reducing risks posed by irresponsible road users.
Sammy reminded the public to refrain from driving after consuming alcohol and to ensure they possess valid driving licences, stressing that such offences not only violate the law but also endanger the lives of other road users.
