A Malaysian woman who became the centre of controversy following a viral video filmed during a trip to China has publicly apologised, admitting her actions were inappropriate and expressing regret over the incident.
Nur Asyiqin Mohd Dalil took to her TikTok account, ekyn.wong, to address the growing criticism, saying she accepted full responsibility for her behaviour during the holiday on June 15.
In her statement, she acknowledged that her actions may have offended others and stressed that there was never any intention to insult, embarrass or provoke conflict. She described her conduct as a spontaneous reaction that was neither planned nor meant to cause harm.
The woman also said she welcomed all criticism and advice with an open mind, adding that the incident had made her realise her behaviour was excessive. She pledged to be more mindful of her actions in the future and to show greater sensitivity towards public sentiments.
Describing the episode as a valuable lesson, Nur Asyiqin expressed hope that the matter could finally be put to rest. She said the experience would help her become a more mature and responsible individual moving forward.
The controversy erupted after a video showing a group of Malaysian tourists shouting remarks such as “smelly” and “didn’t bathe” while covering their noses in a public area in China spread rapidly across social media platforms. The footage drew widespread criticism from both Malaysians and Chinese citizens.
Although the original video has since been removed, copies continue to circulate online, fuelling further debate. The incident also gained international attention after being featured in a report by Cary Johnston on the programme Firstpost America in the United States.
The episode has sparked discussions about cultural sensitivity and responsible behaviour while travelling abroad, with many netizens urging tourists to be respectful representatives of their home countries.
