Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers and personnel have been urged to place greater emphasis on their health and personal safety while carrying out their duties to ensure public security and order can be effectively maintained.
Sabah Assistant Minister of Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Datuk Rina Jainal said neglecting personal health among frontliners could have wider implications, not only for the individuals involved but also for the communities they serve.
“We never know what challenges may arise each day. That is why we are concerned that police personnel may become so focused on their responsibilities that they overlook their own health and wellbeing,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
Rina was commenting on the death of Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin, who is believed to have suffered heart-related complications after inhaling thick smoke during a fire at his residence in Taman Crystal in the early hours of Wednesday.
She said the tragedy should serve as an important reminder about the need for frontliners to prioritise their own safety when responding to emergency situations and critical incidents.
Reflecting on Jasmin’s service, Rina described him as a dedicated and compassionate police officer who consistently worked closely with various stakeholders to address social issues in Tawau and Kalabakan.
According to her, the late officer was particularly committed to community engagement, education and awareness programmes aimed at combating social problems and drug-related crimes.
“He placed great importance on outreach efforts at the grassroots level through collaborative programmes with schools and local communities. His dedication and hard work in the field were truly inspiring,” she said.
Rina added that Jasmin was also widely respected for his approachable nature and willingness to assist members of the public regardless of their background.
She noted that he was always generous with his time and frequently extended his support on matters involving her office and community initiatives.
Earlier, Rina visited the home of Jasmin’s parents in Kampung Sungai Gading Wakuba, Mile 17, Jalan Apas, to offer condolences and moral support to his wife and family on behalf of the ministry.
The passing of the senior police officer has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, community leaders and residents who remembered his commitment to public service and community welfare.
