Former Johor Speaker Leaves UMNO Over Political Concerns

Date:

UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi has announced his immediate resignation from the party, effective today.

The former Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker said his decision was driven by concerns that UMNO Johor is no longer able to make independent decisions and is instead being influenced by external forces.

He said he chose to leave the party immediately rather than wait to be dismissed, adding that the move would allow him to openly express his views without being accused of betraying the party.

Puad stressed that he still respects UMNO as a political platform for Malays and Malaysians, but said he now feels free to criticise the party’s direction.

He also rejected claims that his resignation was motivated by personal interests, insisting it comes at a time when UMNO is perceived to be in a strong position.

According to him, the main reason for his departure is his belief that UMNO Johor lacks full autonomy in its decision-making process.

Puad further alleged that political decisions in the state are being influenced by external parties, which he claims has weakened the independence of the state leadership.

He also said he was informed of such matters during a recent meeting with Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz, including claims related to the dissolution of the state assembly.

Puad added that these developments have led him to conclude that UMNO Johor is operating under constraints, prompting his decision to exit the party.

He also expressed concern over the Barisan Nasional candidate list for the upcoming Johor state election, saying it reflects deeper issues within the party.

Previously, Puad had hinted at making a major announcement on nomination day for the Johor state election before confirming his resignation.

He also confirmed that he will not defend his Rengit state seat in the upcoming election, citing the current political situation within UMNO Johor.
