Police believe the Perodua Kembara involved in a hit-and-run crash on the Federal Highway was borrowed from a car workshop after the suspect’s own vehicle reportedly broke down.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said preliminary investigations indicate the sport utility vehicle (SUV) belonged to a workshop and had been loaned to the 59-year-old suspect while his personal vehicle was being repaired.
“Further investigations are still ongoing,” he said in a statement on Monday.
The case came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting the Petaling Jaya District Police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division to launch an investigation.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 6.10pm on June 20 as the suspect was driving from Shah Alam towards Kuala Lumpur.
Investigators believe the driver was travelling recklessly before colliding with a car and a motorcycle. Following the crash, the suspect allegedly abandoned the Perodua Kembara at the scene and fled before authorities arrived.
The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, while police continue efforts to locate the driver.
Authorities have urged anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts or the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
