A civil servant woman in her late 40s has fallen victim to an online investment scam promoted on Facebook, resulting in losses amounting to RM22,033 after being lured by a fraudulent scheme linked to a user known as “Rafidah”.
Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor, said the victim first came across the investment advertisement on June 15 at around 1pm while browsing the social media platform. The victim was later drawn into the scheme after showing interest in the post.
Police said the woman made initial contact with the Facebook account “Rafidah” on June 25 before transferring RM300 at 9.24pm on the same day as part of the so-called investment process.
She was then contacted by another individual known as “Liza”, who posed as an administrator of the investment platform, further convincing her to continue depositing money over several transactions in the following days.
Between June 27 and June 29, the victim made multiple payments ranging from RM1,300 to RM7,500, with funds transferred into several different bank accounts as instructed by the scammers.
Authorities said despite repeated payments, the victim was continuously asked to deposit more money, which eventually led her to realise she had been deceived.
The woman later lodged a police report at the Kuala Terengganu District Police Headquarters at about 2.30pm, with the case now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Police also revealed that two additional similar cases have been reported involving smaller losses of around RM2,000 and RM800, highlighting a growing trend of online investment scams.
Officials have urged the public to be cautious of unrealistic investment returns and to verify any financial schemes, especially those involving multiple bank accounts, as these are strong indicators of fraud.
