A joint enforcement operation at the Gombak Toll Plaza on Saturday led to the detection of two commercial vehicle drivers who tested positive for drugs during a large-scale inspection targeting drug abuse among professional drivers.
The operation, which began at 8am, was conducted by the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ) in collaboration with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).
Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said urine screening was carried out on 74 drivers, with tests identifying two men who were positive for methamphetamine and cannabis.
The suspects, aged 31 and 41, were driving a timber jinker lorry and a rental vehicle respectively. Both have been detained for further investigation under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
Hamidi said that if the individuals are legally confirmed as drug dependants, JPJ will suspend their driving licences under Section 36 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He added that transport companies also have a responsibility to ensure their drivers comply with the law and remain free from drug abuse, warning that employers who fail to meet licensing requirements or hire drivers involved in drug-related offences may also face legal action.
During the same operation, enforcement officers inspected 228 commercial vehicles, with 43 found to have committed various offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 and its related regulations.
A total of 75 notices were issued, while one stage bus was seized for further action.
Meanwhile, MOTAC inspected 36 tourism vehicles and detected one offence involving the failure to use the services of a licensed tourist guide, which is being investigated under the Tourism Industry Regulations 1992.
Hamidi said the integrated operation was aimed at ensuring only qualified, disciplined and drug-free drivers are allowed to operate vehicles on public roads, stressing that JPJ will continue strengthening joint enforcement efforts to improve compliance and safeguard road users.
