Marvel Actress Wai Ching Ho Dies At 83

Veteran actress Wai Ching Ho, best known for portraying the formidable crime boss Madame Gao in Marvel’s Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders, has died at the age of 83.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, although the cause of death has not been disclosed.

“Our family is deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support, as well as the many heartfelt messages and memories shared about our beloved Wai,” the statement read. “Knowing how much she meant to so many people has brought us comfort during this difficult time.”

Born in Hong Kong, Ho built a remarkable career spanning film, television and theatre. She made her on-screen debut in the soap opera One Life to Live in 1983 before going on to appear in dozens of acclaimed productions.

She gained international recognition in 2015 after being cast as the mysterious and ruthless Madame Gao in Marvel’s hit series Daredevil. She later reprised the role in Iron Fist and The Defenders, cementing her place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Throughout her decades-long career, Ho also appeared in numerous popular television shows and films, including Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Blue Bloods, Orange Is the New Black, Fresh Off the Boat, New Amsterdam, Only Murders in the Building, Hustlers, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and The World’s Greatest.

Animation fans will also remember her as the voice of Grandma Wu in Pixar’s award-winning film Turning Red.

Away from the screen, Ho remained active in theatre, starring in acclaimed stage productions including Endlings (2020), Snow in Midsummer (2022) and Laowang: A Chinatown King Lear in 2025.

Following news of her passing, several former co-stars paid tribute on social media.

Actor Peter Shinkoda, who played Nobu in Daredevil, wrote: “I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you on and off set. You were beautiful.”

Filmmaker and actress Judy Lei, who worked with Ho on The World’s Greatest, remembered the actress as kind, generous and gracious, recalling how Ho remained supportive despite production setbacks during filming.

Wai Ching Ho leaves behind a legacy built on more than four decades of memorable performances across television, film and theatre, earning admiration from audiences and colleagues around the world.
