A viral video showing a man allegedly threatening a woman with what appeared to be a sharp object outside a zakat office has come to the attention of the authorities, with police now investigating the incident.
Kuala Muda District Zakat Officer Ahmad Mustaqim Zainul Abidin confirmed that police officers had visited the office as part of their investigation. He said the pair had completed their business at the zakat office without any untoward incident before the alleged confrontation took place and hoped the matter was the result of a misunderstanding.
According to Ahmad Mustaqim, the man, believed to be in his 30s, is the only child of the woman, who is in her 50s and is registered as a person with a mental disability (OKU). They had visited the office to submit a quotation for repair works on their home in Kampung Segantang Garam, Merbok, which the zakat authorities had approved and plan to begin soon.
The viral footage, shared widely on social media, appears to show the man holding an object believed to be a sharp weapon while ordering his mother to get onto a motorcycle immediately. He was also seen seemingly pulling at the woman’s headscarf, prompting her to comply with his instructions.
Ahmad Mustaqim said any allegations of assault or intimidation would be left to the police, adding that he understood a police report had already been lodged by the complainant. He stressed that the zakat office would fully cooperate with investigators to ensure the matter is resolved appropriately.
He also revealed that the family had qualified for housing assistance after officials conducted two visits to their home, including one by himself a day earlier. Under the approved aid, the family’s house will be renovated to include two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom, facilities that were previously unavailable.
Beyond the home repairs, Ahmad Mustaqim said the zakat office would continue monitoring the family’s welfare through regular follow-ups. Local zakat representatives have also been tasked with providing advice and keeping a close watch to ensure the family receives ongoing support and remains in good condition.
