A woman was left stunned after allegedly discovering an entire plant root, complete with soil still attached, inside a sandwich she bought from a cafe in Ampang.
Sharing her experience on Threads, the woman said she had ordered a takeaway beef salami sandwich before eating it at her workplace.
Photos and a video posted online showed a long plant root hanging from the vegetables inside the sandwich, with what appeared to be soil still clinging to it.
“Ordered a beef salami sandwich from a cafe around Ampang and got complimentary roots and soil too,” she joked.
“It was so fresh I could probably plant it again. Food hygiene, please.”
The woman said she hopes the cafe will improve its food preparation and hygiene standards, adding that no customer should have to encounter something similar.
She explained that she only discovered the root because she cut the sandwich before eating it after arriving at work.
Fortunately, she said she did not suffer any stomach discomfort following the incident.
The customer later left a Google review and claimed she had lodged a complaint with the cafe. However, she deliberately chose not to identify or tag the business in her social media post.
“I didn’t mention or tag the cafe because my intention wasn’t to shame them or hurt their business,” she wrote. “I was simply sharing an experience that shouldn’t have happened.”
The incident sparked mixed reactions online.
Some users felt she should have contacted the cafe privately before sharing the incident publicly, arguing that the business may have offered a refund or replacement.
One commenter, who said they also worked in the food and beverage industry, believed the cafe should have been given an opportunity to respond first.
The woman replied that she also works in the F&B industry and prepares sandwiches herself, which is why she takes food hygiene seriously.
She stressed that the issue was never about getting her money back.
“My concern isn’t the refund. It’s food hygiene,” she said.
Others defended her decision to post about the incident, saying vegetables should have been thoroughly washed and inspected before being served.
Several netizens also encouraged her to lodge a formal complaint with the relevant authorities. However, she said she had not done so and only wanted to raise awareness about proper food handling practices.
The cafe involved has not been publicly identified, and it has yet to respond to the allegations.
