A social media post claiming that a man divorced his wife after losing a football bet has sparked widespread debate and criticism online.
The allegation surfaced in a Threads post shared by user @Raudhah.24, which included a screenshot of a message from a woman claiming her husband had pronounced triple talaq after Argentina lost to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final.
According to the message, the husband had allegedly made a bet with a friend, promising to divorce his wife with triple talaq if Argentina were defeated.
“My husband bet with his friend that if Argentina lost to Spain, he would divorce me with triple talaq. He came home this morning crying uncontrollably,” the woman wrote in the screenshot.
The post drew a response from independent Islamic preacher PU Rahmat, who said the case could fall under talak mu’allaq, or a conditional divorce that depends on the fulfilment of a specific condition.
He explained that while Islamic scholars hold differing views on such cases, the matter has the potential to constitute a valid divorce and should be referred to the Syariah Court for a formal ruling.
“This could be categorised as talak mu’allaq. Although there are differing scholarly opinions, cases like this should be brought before the Syariah Court. For now, there is a possibility that the divorce has taken effect,” he commented.
The post also triggered strong reactions from social media users, many of whom condemned the alleged act of using divorce as the stake in a football bet.
Several users said marriage and divorce should never be treated as a joke or used in gambling, while others urged Muslims to be mindful of the seriousness of pronouncing talaq.
