RM100,000 Black-Winged Kite Seized From Illegal Wildlife Owner In Klang

Date:

A Black-winged Kite worth an estimated RM100,000 has been seized from a house in Taman Sungai Kapar Indah, Klang, after it was allegedly being kept without a valid licence or permit.

The seizure was carried out during Op Bersepadu Khazanah, a joint operation involving the Bukit Aman Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Intelligence Branch and the Selangor Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).

Bukit Aman FRU commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Rosli Md Yusof said the operation was conducted at about 9.40pm on Monday.

A 21-year-old man was arrested after he failed to produce any documents authorising him to own, keep or rear the protected bird of prey.

Police also seized a bird perch made from PVC pipes during the raid.

Rosli said the total value of the seizure was estimated at RM100,020, comprising the bird, valued at RM100,000, and the perch.

He added that cases involving the illegal possession of a Black-winged Kite are rarely encountered during wildlife enforcement operations in Malaysia.

According to Rosli, the success of the operation was the result of close cooperation and intelligence sharing between the Royal Malaysia Police and Perhilitan in tackling the illegal possession and exploitation of protected wildlife.

“The police, through the Federal Reserve Unit, will continue strengthening strategic cooperation with relevant enforcement agencies. Any information related to the illegal possession, smuggling or trade of wildlife will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action will be taken,” he said.

The Black-winged Kite, a bird of prey from the Accipitridae family, is naturally found across Africa, tropical Asia and parts of Europe. It is recognised by its white and grey plumage, distinctive black markings on its wings and striking red eyes. The species typically inhabits open areas and mainly preys on small animals such as rats.

The case is being investigated under Section 68 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
