A 23-year-old man was killed after the car he was driving was involved in a collision with a four-wheel-drive vehicle along Kilometre 79 of the Pan Borneo Highway between Sibu and Bintulu on Thursday afternoon.
Mukah District Police Chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the accident occurred at about 2pm when the victim’s car is believed to have crashed into the rear of the four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The impact caused both vehicles to lose control before veering into the right lane of the road.
“The victim’s car then overturned, causing the driver to be thrown out of the vehicle,” he said in a statement on Friday.
The victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Selangau Health Clinic.
His body was later sent to Mukah Hospital for further action.
Meanwhile, the 72-year-old driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle and his 69-year-old wife escaped the crash without injuries.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Muhamad Rizal urged anyone who witnessed the accident to assist investigations by contacting the investigating officer, Inspector Mohd Rahmat Jalimin, at 011-31627137 or by visiting the nearest police station.
He also reminded motorists to obey speed limits and exercise extra caution when changing lanes along the Pan Borneo Highway to help prevent similar accidents.
