Meth-Positive Driver Arrested After Alleged Hit-And-Run Escape

Date:

A man suspected of fleeing the scene after being involved in a hit-and-run accident was arrested after the car he was driving crashed into a lorry at Guar Chempedak yesterday.

The 51-year-old suspect was apprehended by members of the public who chased after him using five vehicles following the second accident involving a Perodua Viva at a traffic light junction at around 12.40pm.

Yan district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Hamizi Abdullah said police became aware of the incident after a 23-second video showing the collision between the Perodua Viva and a lorry went viral.

He said the footage showed several members of the public pulling the driver out of the vehicle while accusing him of attempting to escape after allegedly hitting a motorcyclist at Kampung Titi Batu, Dulang Kecil, Yan.

“Police later arrived at the scene and detained the suspect after he admitted to driving under the influence of drugs,” he said.

Mohamad Hamizi said the suspect suffered injuries to his mouth when he was arrested and claimed the injuries were caused by members of the public who chased and detained him.

A preliminary urine screening found that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine. The suspect, who works as a lorry driver, also has a previous record involving drug-related offences.

Police are urging members of the public involved in the incident to come forward to assist investigations and help determine the actual circumstances surrounding the case.
