Police are working to locate an e-hailing driver to assist investigations into a viral video showing a male passenger allegedly making remarks deemed insulting towards Islam and the Quran.
Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei said authorities are trying to identify the driver to help determine the identity of the passenger involved in the incident.
“Initial investigations found that the incident took place two days ago at about 5.55pm in the city area, involving a conversation between an e-hailing driver and a passenger that was recorded through a dashboard camera,” he said.
The viral footage showed the driver confronting the passenger over the alleged remarks and reminding him to be careful with his words.
The two-minute-20-second video also captured the passenger apologising before he was believed to have exited the vehicle after the driver stopped by the roadside.
Azrul Hisham said police had earlier received a report regarding the social media post at about 3.25pm yesterday.
The report was lodged by a police officer who came across the video shared on Facebook at about 2.30pm on the same day.
“The post caused dissatisfaction among the complainant as it was believed to have touched on sensitivities and insulted Islam,” he said.
The case is being investigated under several provisions, including Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
