Two men suspected of being involved in a viral video showing a Perodua Bezza allegedly dragging cables were arrested during a raid at a farm hut in Kampung Surapit yesterday.
Police also seized various tools believed to have been used for stealing telecommunication and utility cables during the operation, which was carried out at about 4pm.
Papar district police chief Superintendent Heryan Mohd Tahir said the two suspects, aged 24 and 41, were detained following a police report received on July 18.
He said the report was lodged after the complainant claimed to have seen a Perodua Bezza dragging a black cable along the Simpang Tiga Jalan Takis Hospital area in Papar, raising suspicion that the cable had been stolen.
Following investigations, a team from the Papar District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division conducted a raid at a farm hut in Kampung Surapit and successfully detained both suspects.
Police discovered several items believed to be linked to the alleged theft activities, including two metal cutters, pliers, a hammer, several sharp weapons, four cable sections labelled Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and sacks containing burnt aluminium cable fragments.
Heryan said urine screening tests on both suspects returned positive results for methamphetamine, with the case referred to the Papar District Police Headquarters Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for further action under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Both suspects have been remanded to assist investigations under Section 431A of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Police are continuing investigations to determine the full extent of the alleged cable theft activities and whether other individuals are involved.
